Layering your necklaces

Layering necklaces.

Here we talk about layering jewellery. Specifically, necklaces… A trend that came and has stayed, and one that can immediately dress up even the most basic of outfits.

What are our top tips on layering necklaces?

Firstly, there really are no hard or fast rules around this. Much like any jewellery you wear, it should be personal and make you feel good. If it doesn’t, and it feels forced- then they probably aren’t the right pieces for you… Jewellery should be loved and make you feel wonderful, not uncomfortable. That said, there are a few things that I like the think about when I’m choosing pieces to put together…

-Three’s the magic number for me: I like to usually layer with three necklaces, but two also works, and on occasion I’ve stacked four or five as well. But day-to day my go-to is three necklaces.

-Add a chunky chain into the mix: I like to have one chunkier chain within the mix. I usually start with this; I’ve got a Cuban chain, Rope chain and a Paperclip chain- all in yellow gold that I like to go between. I think the chunkiness updates the look. I tend to swap around alternating between heavier, eye-catching chains and slimmer, daintier until I find a balance.

-Vary the lengths: This one may seem obvious, but the lengths need to be different. Give each chain a little breathing space between the next one, at least half an inch I would say.

-Identify a ‘Main character’: I like to have one focal point- I like to think of it as the ‘Main character’. Usually this happens to be the longest chain (but it doesn’t have to be) and it’s the one with the most prominent or largest pendant, gem stone or diamond.

- Mix ‘til your heart’s content: Mix your metals! I’ve heard a lot of people say that you shouldn’t. But we have come away from sticking to one metal over the past 10 years. It really is whatever goes… I love to mix white gold and yellow gold chain.

- Experiment:  Don’t be worried to have some fun with layering. You really can’t go too far wrong. If you really love each chain, then try them together. Switch it up!

-Choose the ones you love: I choose my chains because I individually love them all, and don’t worry about whether they will work together. I have never bothered with pieces of fashion jewellery, instead, I’ve spent years growing a small but beautiful selection of fine jewellery that I absolutely adore. In my opinion, it’s worth waiting and saving up to invest in pieces of jewellery that will last, never go out of fashion and that you love.

Lastly, any ‘Don’ts’ to layering?

I think when layering, if you have to ask ‘Is this too much?’ Then it probably is… So, to avoid giving Pat Butcher a run for her money maybe remove a piece until you feel comfortable again.
